Species text
Notaris scirpi is large weevil found on Carex, Juncus and Typha in wet places. It is Widespread but local, distributed throughout England and Wales, although not recorded in South West England. It is phytophagous, associated with lesser pond-sedge Carex acutiformis and bulrush Typha latifolia. On the Continent, this species has been recorded from sedges and club-rushes. The larvae develop at the roots of the foodplant. Threats include drainage for reasons such as agricultural improvement and development. Falling water tables because of water abstraction and river engineering schemes may also threaten this species. Water tables should be maintained at high levels and water bodies should be isolated from sources of eutrophication and pollution. Clearance should be undertaken on a rotational basis and should aim at maintaining a variety of early successional stages and ensuring the presence of the foodplant (Hyman & Parsons, 1992).
