Species text
The JNCC Calypterate Review (1996) indicates that the distribution of the species is Southern England and East Anglia, in broadleaved woodland with old woods preferred. There is only a single post-1960 record, from Oxford, Wychwood Forest NNR (1964), and a record in South Essex in 2007 is new to the county. The species may be too scarce to have been detected by the relatively low level of recording in this group in recent decades. In Europe it is rare, found in meadows and forest edges. The larval hosts not known, but the larvae are probably parasitoids of bugs (Hemiptera). Adults are found from May and June, with a single generation. The structure of the egg and the female terminalia indicate that the egg is laid on the host (Belshaw 1993). It is important to maintain open rides and clearings in woods, ensuring a wide range of trees, shrubs and herbs. References
