Species text
This ground beetle is widespread but local throughout much of England, but is mainly a south eastern species. It is possibly under-recorded as it is difficult to identify and can be confused with O. rufibarbis. It occurs in calcareous grassland, chalk pits, coastal cliffs and occasionally on sand. The beetle is phytophagous, feeding mainly on seeds. Adults have been found under stones, under piles of bark and in ditch litter. Threats include the loss of calcareous grassland through improvement by reseeding or by the application of fertilisers, or by conversion to arable agriculture. Changes in grazing or cutting regimes may be a further threat. Management should aim at maintaining open conditions and encouraging early successional stages (Hyman & Parsons, 1992). References
