This species was not listed in the insect Red Data Book (Shirt, 1987). Hymans & Parson (1992) state that it has only been recorded from four vice-counties, all in England, and recently from just three vice-counties. This species is difficult to identify and may be confused with other members of the genus. The beetle is found in ancient broad-leaved woodland and pasture-woodland, recorded under the bark of a freshly sawn beech, on beech logs, on the cut ends of felled oak trees and from loose bark of fire damaged sycamore.
