Species text
Philonthus fumarius is widely distributed but very local in the southern half of England with scattered records north to South West Scotland, and is also known in North and South Wales. It is primarily a fen species, but it has also been found in a few other marshes, especially on the coast. It has mostly been found in reed or sedge debris or in Sphagnum moss, but has also been recorded in decaying seaweed, on mud and in flood litter. Water tables should be kept at an adequate level to retain wet conditions and should be isolated from sources of eutrophication and pollution. References
