Marked decline in both the numbers of breeding pairs and passage birds since the late 1980s. Regularly bred in most metropolitan woodlands (particularly Hainault & Epping) as well as in the Mill Green & Danbury Woodlands until the early 1990s - very few since with no breeding for last five years. 2 – 3 singing males only in recent years; very poor numbers on passage.
