Poecilobothrus principalis was given Nationally Scarce status in Falk (1991), but this was reduced to Local in Recorder 3 and it has been excluded from Falk & Crossley (2005) on the basis that it has now been recorded from 16 counties. The fly is found on coastal levels and saltmarshes, recorded from the south and east coast of Britain from Pembrokeshire to Lincolnshire with an isolated record from Durham. Adults are found beside brackish pools and ditches, but its larval biology is unknown, although they are probably semi-aquatic predators in brackish mud. References
