Species text
This species has been widely recorded in southern England north to South Lancashire. There is also an old record for Lanarkshire in Scotland. Its status has been revised from RDB 3 (Rare) in Shirt (1987). The beetle has an indicator status Grade 2 in Harding & Rose (1986). This beetle has been found in ancient broad-leaved woodland and pasture-woodland. It occurs under bark and in wood mould, being particularly found in damp and wet decayed cavities inside the trunks and boughs of old broad-leaved trees. It has been mainly recorded from beech, although it has also been recorded from elm, oak and sycamore. Threats include the loss of broad-leaved woodland and parkland and habitat loss, in particular, through the felling of ancient and fungus-infected trees, removal of dead wood from living trees and the destruction or removal of standing and fallen dead wood for reasons such as forest hygiene, aesthetic tidiness, public safety or for use as fire-wood. Ancient and fungus-infected trees, and both fallen and standing dead timber, especially with the bark attached, should be retained. The removal of dead timber from ancient and fungus-infected trees and the blocking of rot holes should be avoided (Hyman & Parsons, 1994). References
