Species text
Rhizophagus picipes is a small red predatory bark beetle. Its status revised from RDB 3 (Rare) in Shirt (1987). Old records indicate that this species has been widely distributed in Great Britain and recorded from South Devon to Easterness in Scotland, but it has recently recorded from seven vice-counties (Hyman & Parsons, 1992). The beetle is usually found in woodland and pasture-woodland, where it occurs at sap and under the bark of pine, oak, beech, ash, poplar, alder, sycamore and probably in association with other trees as well as in fungi and rotting vegetation. Trees and both fallen and standing dead timber, especially with the bark attached, should be retained. The removal of dead timber from trees should be avoided. Gaps in the age structure of the tree population should be identified and the continuity of the appropriate habitat ensured by regeneration, suitable planting and possibly with pollarding. References
