This beetle's status has been revised from RDB 1 (Endangered) in Shirt (1987). It has only been recorded from three vice-counties and recently recorded from just two sites, South Devon before 1970 and Dorset and East Sussex in the period since 1969 (Hyman & Parsons, 1994), but, over the past decade or so, it has turned up at 3 new British sites, one in Leicestershire, one in Surrey and one in East Sussex (P. Hammond, pers. comm.). The beetle has been recorded from coastal landslips and seepages, and from near a reservoir. It occurs on damp sand beside fresh water, near springs and pools in coastal chines, in seepage sites and on the broken faces of sandy cliffs. The adult is predatory and has been recorded in June and September. It was found on the side of the marshy pond area at the top of the sand pit and is the first record for Essex. The degradation of suitable habitat through natural succession and the invasion of scrub on stabilised areas is a threat. References
