Species text
Tachys scutellaris is a very local small brownish black ground beetle, restricted to the southern and eastern coasts of England north to Norfolk. Its status has been revised from RDB3 (Rare) in Shirt (1987). The species is recorded by Luff (1998) from only 9 British squares post-70 but, since Peter Hammond has been checking out Essex coastal sites for A. poeciloides he has turned it up in about 5 or 6 places (P. Hammond, pers. comm.). The species is associated with saltmarshes or brackish water. This predatory species occurs in marshes and on sandy silts and mud, apparently dependant upon saline soil.
