Species text
Records are widely dispersed in southern England extending as far north as Yorkshire and into North Wales, with about a dozen known widely scattered post 1960 sites. This species was first discovered in Britain as a larva in 1952 though some older specimens have been located in collections. The status has been revised from RDB3 in Shirt (1987). The fly occurs in woodlands or heathland besides clumps of trees. The sites typically have dry soils, as on the clay cappings on downs or on heaths. The whitish larva has been reared from damp soil and detritus in woodland, and has also been found in soil under dog's mercury Mercurialis perenne. Threates include clearance of woodland and heathland and drainage of any damp areas. Management should maintain rides and clearings in woods and use traditional management of heathland to produce a mosaic of vegetation types including limited scrub and copses. Retain any marshy areas as potential breeding sites (Falk, 1991a). References
