Species text
The Nationally Scarce Volucella inflata is largely confined south of a line between the Severn and The Wash. Heavily wooded districts are ideal, and unusually for a Volucella this species is associated with sap runs rather than with the nests of social Hymenoptera. Adults have been observed ovipositing in sap runs on a tree trunk, and larvae, thought to be of this species, were found in the same location (Stubbs & Falk 2002). When the provisional Essex Red Data list was prepared, there were 3 recent Essex records, 2 from ancient woodland and one from a gravel pit near Bishops Stortford. P.R. Harvey has subsequently found the species at Warwick Wood in Havering in 1998 and at Mill Meadows in Basildon in 2003. It has also been recorded from Crockleford Hall in 1999 and Garnetts Wood in 2000 (Payne 2001), both in North Essex. References
