Old record for Epping Forest

Species text
This crab spider appears to be scarce, with scattered records in the south of Britain. At most sites only a few specimens have been found, but the spider may be slightly under-recorded because it matures early in the season. The spider occurs in a fairly wide range of grassland habitats, and has also occasionally been found on heathland and coastal under-cliff in Dorset. Both sexes are adult in April and May. In Essex it was found in 2005 in large numbers at a site in Basildon. The only previous county record had been from Epping Forest during the 19th century, found amongst specimens labelled as X. luctuosus in the collections of O.P.-Cambridge and A.R. Jackson (Locket, Millidge & Merrett, 1974). References
