Dear Catherine, you need to post a photo of your ladybird to get an informed answer - ladybirds can be incredibly variable in markings.

On 23 August last year I spotted some strange creature on the lawn, in my back garden. I investigated and found that it was a caterpillar, the size of my index finger. Fortunately Gardeners World ran a piece about wildlife in gardens and I was able to identify it as an Elephant Hawk Moth caterpillar. Hopefully it found a spot in the flower border to bury itself and will emerge this spring as a moth.

I have had some new ladybirds on my allotment, for the past couple of years. They are a vivid orange colour and have no spots at all. How would you classify my spotless ladybird?

It looks to be an orb web spider, which will be juvenile at this time of year, but which species is not identifiable from the photograph. Thu 22nd January 2015 15:44 by Peter Pearson What spider? mjij. menu I u lo A leaf was found apparently struck to the trunk of a tree at The Walls. Easing it up it was found to be a spiders nest which was being used by the Harlequins as shelter. After taking the photo the leaf was replaced and fortunately there was enough adhesion to stick it down again. I know these were Harlequins, but what is the spider. |
