This fly was spotted in the garden on 17 June. At first I thought it was Voluculla bombylans but was not sure about the gingery hairs around the thorax. I realise that this hoverfly can vary according to the species who,s nest is scavenged. However it does give the appearance of Leucozona lucorum, but was on the large size for this insect. It was a slow flyer staying in the lower plants in a sunny border but very restless landing on sunny foliage very breifly before moving on. It appeared to follow white tailed bumble bees around the campunula flowers.
