And the links with old things like ferns, or trees coppiced or left just to grow any-old-how. And references to Nightingales, and their diminishing numbers. I heard my first Nightingale a few years ago in the south of France, not because we don't have them here (we do!) but I had never been near enough when anyone who knew about them could tell me what they were. In France, an English friend said ' can you hear the Nightingale?' and only then did I appreciate the huge cacophony of sound, with so many variations and so much music in it, that I will remember it for ever!
